Once Upon A Milkshake

A friend of the girl's recently introduced us to this quaint little ice cream parlor that serves a delightful selection of ice creams and milkshakes! Despite being in a hard-to-find location at Tanjong Pagar, its hard to miss the place with their bright purple walls and warm lights.

On every table is a marker that reads "Taken" on one side and "Avaliable" on the other - quirky, huh? Pick a choice of milkshakes or ice cream from the creatively designed menu. For that day, we picked Cerious Maple and Chocolate Truffle Castle. Milkshakes are priced at $3.30 for the mini and $5.50 for the regular. Ice creams are between $2.80 - $7.20 depending on how many scoops you pick. Ouam (pronounced ohm) also sells Chocolate Cheesecake at $1.50/stick and Chocolate Chip Cookies at $2.50/cup.

Ouam lives up to their motto of serving "premium ice-cream milkshakes at non-premium prices"! Their milkshakes are satisfyingly thick (you can opt for a thinner shake!) and the mini serves well enough for one as an after dinner treat. Come on a Saturday night between 8-9pm with your loved ones to enjoy milkshakes and ice creams by candlelight. Very, very fairytale indeed.

Everything With Fries

Spent a short but nice Sunday evening with the girl at Joo Chiat. Was there to check out Obolo Cheescakes but stumbled by this cafe. The simple decor and white-washed wall caught my eye but also, the quirky name made me glance back. Everything With Fries! We suspect it's a newly opened cafe, the place still has the faint, lingering smell of paint.

Garlic and Herbs Fries - $3.50

Not bad for a decent portion of straight-cut fries. You get to choose between straight-cut and shoestring-cut. They had an assortment of fries flavors like Sour Cream and Onion, Curry, Salt & Pepper.. just to name a few. Ours came with a few cloves of garlic and the fries wasn't too oily! I wished they gave more seasonings though, couldn't get enough of it!

Nutella Tart - $3.90

Couldn't resist trying this since I have a soft spot for Nutella. This was really surprisingly good. The filling was soft and level of sweetness was just right, the crust was crunchy and the generous drizzle of nutella was delicious! Definitely going to go back for this!

Service there wasn't too bad albeit the fumbling of a male wait-staff who tried to take our order without writing it down and promptly forgot my choice of fries when I ordered a second item! But overall, it was good and they asked for feedback - I told them, more seasonings for the fries! We'll definitely be back!

Nasi Goreng Belachan

Personally, I think fried rice is a master of deception.
The humble dish looks seemingly simple to cook.
But trust me, SEDAP fried rice does not come by easily.
I could go on and on about the dish but hey, you gotta try the Nasi Goreng Belachan at Danga Bay, Johor Bahru.

Its spicy, cheap and downright shoik!

Melaka

Hello and Happy 2009! Very Hungry People went on a long hiatus to deal with the reality of life and the ups and downs that came with it. Nevertheless, we've learnt the best weapon to combat bad times: FOOD. Here is a small teaser from our recent trip to Melaka (psst, we went there just to eat!).

Melaka
Sunset.. just before a downpour.

Simple pleasures
Brought my favourite rempah udang back (handmade nyonya kuehs!) and couldn't resist getting the old-school coffee cup as well..

Keep looking back for more! :)

Aston's Specialties

Had an intense craving for steak yesterday, so YY and i trotted down to Aston's at The Cathay (4th floor).

It was our first time there despite all the ra-ra about their huge portions and nice food at affordable prices. We heard bout the snaking queue too!

And yes! There was indeed a queue though it was still relatively early for dinner (bout 7-ish). We didn't have to wait super long though. Customers (those in front) were given menus and orders were taken in the queue - good for facilitation and efficiency.

The Filipino lady who took our orders was friendly and polite. Good impression despite the wait =)
We were then ushered to our table, where we waited about 10-15 mins for our orders.
The teenager who brought our food to the table wasn't really knowledgeable though. YY ordered the New York Strip while I had the Prime Ribeye, so we wanted to doubly confirm that we got the right cuts. When the first plate came and I asked if that was the New York Strip, the youngster merely agreed with me that it was and hurried away. Being highly suspicious about the cut, we proceeded to ask a older staff who told us that it was the Prime Ribeye. Now I am convinced by his answer because it looked more like the Ribeye cut.
But oh wells, shall pardon them since it was a busy evening and they are so young!

Ok more bout the food. Hmm..every main gets you a choice of 2 side dishes. I had the corn-on-cob and onion rings while YY had the corn and house salad. The onion rings were pretty good I must say. Very tasty. Salad was OK...but not more. Corn-on-cob was quite disappointing cuz it was really soggy. Think they must have boiled it for too long.
As for the meats, both were done to our liking - we requested medium. The texture was pretty good too. I personally feel that steak done medium should have some blood oozing out when you slice thru, and I wasn't disappointed. It was juicy, yet not undercooked or overcooked. =)

Ah! But I was disappointed by the portions. Was actually expecting to be really full after the meal. But it wasn't exactly a huge portion like what others said. Just merely enough, or perhaps the Ribeye wasn't very big. Maybe I should go for the Xtra Cut next time! Haha.

Price-wise, we paid a total of $33.20 including GST. No service charge. We had two steaks and two IBC rootbeers. =)
The ribeye was around $14 and the NY strip was $15.

Apologies for the lack of pictures!!
