Yummy food from Taiwan - Part 1

Just came back from Taiwan trip and i shall blog about the food i ate over there in the next few entries!

There are quite a number of Japanese fast food outlets in Taiwan and for our first dinner in Taiwan, my friends and I step into TonKatsu, one of the Japanese fast food outlets we could find in XiMenDing. And of cos, i ate Tonkatsu for my meal:

Tonkatsu Set
This Tonkatsu set comes with a bowl of rice, Miso soup, a plate of Tonkatsu and a Jelly-like dessert. You can add a cup of drink for NT$15 (if i remember correctly). You can go for additional servings of rice or miso soup if you wish to. There is a small self-service counter for additional servings of rice or/and miso soup. Good recommendation for people who have a big appetite =) because it's not only nice but filling as well!

While on our way to Wu Fen Pu (Garments Wholesale Area), we settled our lunch at one of the little eateries located next to one of the metro exits at HouShan Pi station.

"Suan La" (Sour & Spicy) soup.
It taste quite different from our local Sweet and Sour soup. I don't really like the taste of it. My friends and i were still figuring whether it's the Pig's blood or the Black vinegar that contributed to the weird taste I dislike.

Cong You Bing.
This Cong You Bing is delicious! It's kinda similar to our roti prata.. I like the crispy taste and the Spring Onions in it. And it's not very oily. Good.

Xiao Long Bao.
We love Xiao Long Bao!! Tender meat and the gravy! Yum Yum.. But the pork taste is slightly stronger than our local ones somehow. Well, I still find it yummy!

Miao Er Duo (Cat's Ears).
No worries! This ain't real cat's ears! Initially we thought they really eat cat's ears. But we came to realise that these like cat's ear-like stuff are made from dough. It's abit like our Mee Huan Kuay. I personally like this dish because i like the taste, but one of my friends doesn't really fancy this dish because there's cuttlefish taste in the gravy.

Nasi Ayam

I came across this Malay stall with my mum the other day when we went to the Temple (@ Si Ma Lu) near Bugis. I'm sorry that I forgot to note the exact address! This stall is located in the building next the Indian Temple and beside it is a Rojak Stall (apparently this rojak stall is quite famous).
*Update: The stall is located in Fortune Centre, 190 Middle Road

I like their Nasi Ayam because the Chicken meat is tender and the chilli is sweet and a little spicy. What's more, the rice is not too hard nor too soft. Give it a try if you all manage to find the stall k! =P

Xin Kee Zi Char

This is my Grandfather's favourite Zi Char stall.
According to my Mom , the stall owner has changed though.
But we decided to give it a try still and
most of the dishes are still awesome! Here are some of the house specialties!!Sweet & Sour Pork!
This is real good I tell ya..the battered pork is still crispy and the sauce is flavorful!
A MUST-MUST TRY!!
Fish Head Bee Hoon
At first, the soup was a disappointment cuz it wasn't as tasty as before.
But I swore the soup got tastier towards the middle and the end of the meal, I don't know why!
Very generous meaty fish pieces though!
Sambal Tapioca Leaves
This dish is the TOPS!
As much as it looks deceivingly normal, the tapioca leaves were really nicely cooked.
The dish was fragrant and we could taste the pieces of dried shrimp from the sambal.
Nice!
Fried Prawns
This used to be my favourite dish but to be honest, I don't think the new people did an equally good job with frying prawns.
The prawns were huge and crispy, but I still felt it could be done better.
Worth a try though. Eat while its hot!

The stall's located in an Ol'skool Kopitiam at Eng Hoon Street (Near Tiong Bahru market).
Opens 11am-3pm and then 530pm-930pm.
Alternate Tuesdays off.

MaMa Bakery (Japanese Bakery)

This bakery is perfect place for afternoon tea. The ambience is nice and the bread and coffee/tea are of affordable price. The one on the left is tuna bread, the on the right is cheese mayo and vege (i think that's its name. but anyway, it tastes like foccacia =) and there aren't any vege in it actually. Should give it a try!)
The tea is not bad too. The one on the left is Blueberry and Raspberry tea and the one on the right is Lemon tea.

It's such a nice way to spend your afternoon having tea and delicious bread in a soothing and quiet environment, isn't it?Yea, so head down to MaMa Bakery@ Square 2! (just above Novena mrt station)
