Christmas Dinner!

"Let's say grace then we can start eating."

That line never fails to make my insides bubble with excitement and my stomach from groaning with hunger. Which explains why I could never keep my eyes shut long enough till grace has been said.

This year isn't an exception. From watching my Uncle arrive with the big bag that contained the whole turkey, ham, pork knuckles, roast beef and log cake to watching in anticipation, trying to stop myself from drooling as they remove each dish from the boxes and arrange it on the table. Yes, the table that is lined already with my Grandma's fried bee hoon (thin rice noodles) and prawn fritters. I couldn't take my eyes off the table!

awesome beehoon!
prawn fritters

Every occasion celebrated in our family will always be accompanied by my Grandma's bee hoon. No other noodle dish I've ever eaten can achieve the same standard by this beyond awesome beehoon from my Grandma. I could never get enough of eating it! If my stomach was a bottomless pit, I'd probably eat up the whole pot before moving on the rest. Oh, my Grandma's prawn fritters are to die for! She added something in the batter to make it taste really good and I never put any chili on it 'cos it'll just ruin the perfect taste. Oily as it may be, to hell with it, I'm having all of it!

curry chicken

And... CURRY CHICKEN!!! Curry chicken just owns! Like seriously. The gravy is thick and spicy and omg, I can just drink everything up even though it's supposed to be very bad for your body. But that's just how good it is!

roast beef

We had the usual Christmas fare as well, turkey, roast beef - the works! I love love the roast beef and how it's still red in the middle. I'd probably never get why some people are put of by it. Red meat is good.

turkey and mashham!

Turkey is a must have each year but I never understood why I don't quite like it. I won't cut it out of my dinner but I would prefer say, roast beef over turkey. I think it's my dislike for 'dry' meat. I like the oily and moist part of poultry like the thigh! And one of my faves, ham! I like how finely sliced it is and god, I'll drizzle it with the gravy and just pop it in my mouth. Brillance.

pork knuckles

I love the bread rolls. They toasted it lightly before serving so it's crispy on the outside and really warm inside. I love the sound of the bread crust cracking as you break it into two, music to my ears! Heh. Pork knuckles was AWESOME. The crackling was super crisssspy and the meat was tender and it smelled really good. I like how I got to get a whiff of the meat before it enters my mouth. Gahhh, awesome!

log cake

And for desserts - Log Cake! Yay I love log cake and I normally hate cream and stuff but with log cake, I'd scrape away the last of the cream on the plate. Oh, and don't you think the log cake looks really pretty! :P

so much foooood!!!fruit punch

We had fruit punch for drinks, of which my cousin added tequila to. Not that anyone minds, hahah. And see how much food we had!!

PS: Sorry for the crappy photos but my camera was being a bitch that day! ):

Cook Fest Day 3

Cook Fest Day 3 (don't ask why!) featured all of us here at VHP (yes, i'm bloody lazy) coming together and contributing to feed one another's tummy. SO AWESOME, RIGHT! :D

spicy cheese donut!peanut butter-choc donut

Soooo, minus Brenda, the rest of us decided to get our ingredients from Raffles City's Marketplace. Jac and I bought a donut each to satisfy our hungry stomach first and had a cuppa at Starbucks.

salad with feta and chicken

We got shitloads of ingredients like salmon, chicken thighs and a hell lot of vegetables. We each were in charge of different dishes and I made the salad and the bloody dressing from scratch. I did lemon dressing which initially smelt pretty good but at the end, I couldn't stand the smell. It made me feel nauseous but somehow or rather, the rest of them liked it. :| I bought the mixed vegetables from the supermarket and added fennel bulb, asparagus and english parsley to it. Oh, and feta cheese!
fried enoki

Brenda pan fried enoki in some batter which turned out to be really nice! I think it wasn't even enough for us. Fish fingers were on the menu as well but they got slightly destroyed in the process of being cooked, ahaha.
grilled asparagus and salmon

AND WE FINALLY GOT TO USE AN OVEN!!! I'm a oven-deprived kid so I made sure that we made use of the oven. We had grilled chicken, grilled salmon and baked corns. Karin had a "secret" marinate for her chicken and salmon! We grilled asparagus together with the salmon too! OMFG YUMMY!!! I think I might even be slightly in love with that salmon and asparagus photo. :|

I love ovens, it's one of the greatest invention of all time. And because of my deep love for ovens now, I'M GETTING ONE FOR CHRISTMAS!!!! Okay, I think I pretty much win at life now. Merry Christmas y'all! More posts soon!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Macarons and Non-Stop Eating

This is actually a long overdue post but I felt compelled to write it anyway since it is one of the most significant food-related days of my life. I'll get to it soon anyway though!

Takoyaki
takoyaki!

Those little gems are authentic takoyaki that Brenda and I got at Tangs Marketplace. They had this small shop set up with two Japanese selling this and pancakes as well. These were slightly smaller than the ones we've always eaten and instead of garnishing with bonito, they sprinkled over finely shredded seaweed. They also added another kind of dressing besides the usual mayonnaise. Normally, I found it hard to stomach the big takoyaki balls but with this, I could easily eat all 5 of them! That's how good these are!

Brenda and I bought a cheese pancake to share as well and again, it tasted really different than the ones we've always eaten. I forgot to take a photo though and once I remembered, the pancake had long disappeared down our stomach. ): Besides being smaller, the cheese they used were different as well. They used what we think is Chedder cheese, hence the taste wasn't as overwhelming and you could actually taste the pancake mixture which I really really enjoyed.

Moving on, we went to Food Republic for what was initially supposed to be afternoon tea which eventually became a very early dinner. While my Aunty was queuing for the much talked about Hokkien Mee, Brenda and I bought a basket of Har Kow from one of the pushcarts that were going round. God, the Har Kow tasted bloody good! The prawn fillings were huuuugeeee and the prawns were fresh, and I love chewing on fresh prawns. Weird, but hey, who likes bad prawns? The skin of my har kow broke away as I brought it to my plate though, but I wasn't too particular about that since I usually don't eat the skin and prawn filling together anyway.

My aunty came back with the hokkien mee which I tucked into it gleefully. I nearly died seeing it before me, I've been craving for that plate of noodles for days! And when my spoon piled high with noodles and the sweet sweet gravy went into my mouth, I was thrown straight to Heaven. It's not exactly my first time eating it but when you've been craving for something for days and when eaten, taste twice as better as you though it would, you just sort of die and fade into a delirious state.

Brenda wanted to get soup so she ended up getting the Carrot and Corn Soup of which she subsituted rice with steamed tofu and steamed egg instead. We liked the steamed tofu but the egg was slightly on the bland side. ): The soup was nice though, sweet enough and the carrots were soft! This soup never fails to remind me of when I was younger and my aunty frequently cooked this for us. Sigh, homecooked food wins hands down!

My aunty insisted on having rice for dinner so she ended up getting Yong Tau Foo with rice. I liked the soup base but there wasn't anything about it to rave about though.

I decided to get the Chicken Tikka Wrap even though it was bloody huge and I was near exploding now. But I've been meaning to give that store a try and I love naan and chicken tikka. Gaahhhh! The entire wrap was enormous; it probably would have seemed more normal if I weren't so full though. I shared it with Brenda who was also pretty damn full as well. I liked the chicken and the wrap was GOOD!!! It was soft and thick - just the way I like it. The dressings in the wrap was a bit too much though so I got most of it out with the lettuce.

We walked for a bit to attempt and digest the amount of food we ate at Food Republic. Head over to Paragon despite the rain. Walked for a bit and window-shopped and I spied Bakerzin! We decided to just pop in and see if they have macarons, since I'm on my persuit of the tiny gems. And lo and behold! WE FOUND MACARONS!!!!

chocolate macaron!

There in the small corner of the glass shelf, sitting quietly admist the gorgeous looking cakes, were a bowlful of macarons beckoning up at me! OMG. I had to stop myself from screaming with joy. But seriously, I could feel my insides bursting with euphoria and I couldn't stop beaming. I decided to be boring and just get a chocolate one for myself and a hazelnut one for Brenda. My aunty refused to try one despite our persuasion and my offer to treat her. ):

I excitedly carried my small bag of goodies out and we stopped to snap the photos of the little gems and to get our first bite of the little thing that The Girl Who Ate Everything had been raving on about. My braces clad teeth sank into the macarons and the taste of the chocolate enguled my mouth. Cue slightly louder outburst and overly happy face again. Brenda had a seemingly same reaction, albiet a more calmed version. My aunty couldn't help but laugh at us. I think if I wasn't in such a euphoric and delirious state, I'd be laughing at myself as well.

hazelnut macaron

It's our first time eating macarons and I've been searching for them for ages! Besides Bakerzin, I've only seen them at Swiss Bake which I think only carries two flavours. Bloody hell. Does anyone knows of any other places I can get them?

Ahhhh, what a mighty long first entry. Finally done now!
